South Beach Towers

South Beach Towers examines the Art Deco architecture of Miami Beach through a series of black-and-white studies that isolate its towers, façades, and geometric forms.

Photographed in the intense Florida sun and rendered with a red-filter effect, the buildings emerge against skies turned nearly black. Stripped of much of their surrounding context, familiar structures become something more abstract: planes of white architecture suspended against darkness, defined by geometry, repetition, and shadow.

I was drawn particularly to the towers, the vertical elements that give these buildings their individual identities. Seen from below and separated from the activity of the street, they take on a monumental presence. Curves, setbacks, windows, ornament, and sharply illuminated surfaces become the subjects of the photographs as much as the buildings themselves.

The series is both an observation of Miami Beach's architectural character and an attempt to transform it. Rather than documenting these structures as they ordinarily appear, I use light, perspective, and the darkened sky to remove them from the everyday city and reconsider them as sculptural forms.
